to pay him something. Just how much I cannot say as yet.

If you think proper, as he will be here at New Years, I should like authority at that time to go with him into a full inquiry and then pay such sum not to exceed $500.00, as such inquiry show to be right and proper.

I am directed by the Maj Gen Comdg. to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19" inst and to say that Lieut Schale not having arrived here with the Guard and prisoner to prevent delay the Order was issued directing the Corp to proceed to Fort Pulaski in charge. Your having been directed to relieve Lieut Quinby from duty at your Post it was thought probable that you wold need another Officer for duty, which was another reason for relieving the Lieut, and directing him too return to his station.

Your right to send the Lieut in charge is not questioned. A letter of explanation to accompany the order was written, but was mislaid which was the cause of your not receiving it.

I regret a delay of some days and seeming neglect of your note of 19" inst, touching the Marine Hospital which however you must divide with me, as the note itself was late.

I am of course unwilling to do anything which you think a deprivation to the sick of your command. At the same time I think the course of the Surgeons should have been different.

Hence, while I do not feel at liberty to agree that I will not call for the Hospital before the 1" of March, the period you speak of, you are cheerfully authorized, (or your successor in Command,) to make use of it as heretofore till further orders, or until other provision has been made.

Respectfully
