Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala Jany 5" 1867 /337 Probate Judge Lowndes Co Hayneville Ala Sir Sophy Allen who with her daughter Lucy Ann aged 13 years has been working at the plantation of Mr James Sellars in your County makes complaint at this office that Mr Sellars refuses to let her have the child saying that he purposes having it apprenticed to himself. Under Sec 11 of the Apprentice Law as passed at the session of the Legislature of 65 to 66, it is the duty of the Probate Judge on application for apprenticeship to notify the Father or Mother of the Child that they may appear and show their ability to support it. As such notification has not been given, it is presumed that application for apprenticeship has not been made. I ask therefore that on this womans application a writ of habeas corpus may be issued for said child and the question of right to her at once settled. Very Respectfully Your Obdt Servant O.D.
