Very Respectfully Your obdt servant Maj Genl & Asst Comr 335 Head Quarters Sub Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala Jany 14th 1867 330/345 McGogy J.F. Agent Greenville Ala Sir Your communication of the 11th inst enclosing an article from the "Greenville Advocate" and defending yourself against the implication there attempted to be cast on yourself in common with other officers of the Bureau, is received. In reply I have to say that this office has no information showing that you are doing otherwise than performing honestly and efficiently your duties. Second - that it is not the custom of this office to pay any attention to the comments (either good or bad) of the press in this State, certainly not to the extent of allowing such comments to militate against the character of an officer or agent of the Bureau. You will not on any account or under any circumstances reply to the article in question and if asked why you do not reply, you can inform them that you do not hold your office from them and are in nowise responsible to them for your actions. In conclusion I would suggest that you call to mind the fable of the Moon and the cur, and that you remember that he that touches pitch becomes defiled. Very Respectfully Your Obt servant O.D.
