Nor Ala Huntsville Ala Colonel, In accordance with the recommendation of the Board of examination convened by S.O.84 series 1866 from these Hd Qrs, I am directed by the Asst. Comm. to inquire into the practicability of your reducing your clerical force at Huntsville to one person. The other Superintendents have none more than one clerk and it is thought that your work might be performed by the same force. You will please report by return of mail as to this matter. Major In accordance with the recommendation of the Board of examination convened by S.O.84 series 1866 from these Hd Qrs you are hereby directed to discharge the messenger now employed in your office to take office on the 15" inst. Major I have the honor to request that you will forward this letter (enclosed) to Capt. W.H.H. Peck Asst. Supt. at Tuscaloosa. The mail between here and that point in so exceedingly irregular that I think if you send the letter by one of the up boats which pass your place it will reach him more promptly than in any other way. Captain Two communications have been sent you, the first on the 4" and the second on the 23" ults stating that it was considered advisable to abandon the Bureau station at Tuscaloosa (as being a point less important than some others) and to send you as Superintendent to Talladega which is now without a permanent Superintendent. In these letters you were directed to state the reasons if any existed for not following out this plan. No answers have been received to either of these letters although communications written by you subsequent to both dates have been received here. You will at once acknowledge receipt of this letter stating whether the other letters were received, and if so, why they were not answered, and also make full statement as to the change proposed above.
