Sir

Your favor of 28" January, addressed to Maj Genl Swayne has been received, and in reply, I am directed to inform you that no definite arrangement can be made in reference to appropriating money for the purpose of building school houses in your County. You may confer with Major Pierce on the subject, and should you jointly conclude to establish schools at the three points in your parish that you refer to, this office will assist in the building of three school houses; with the understanding that the planters in your county do as you say they will, viz, give one acre of ground on which to erect school house the timber to build &c

The Assistant Commissioner is of course not officially in favor of, or adverse to, any particular denomination; nor the inculcation of any particular religious system but consider it desirable that freedmen should receive religious instruction of such general character as you propose.

There is no objection to your appointing teachers for the same, with the approval of Major Pierce, provided said teachers are proper and suitable persons.

It is gratifying to know that the residents in your County take so much interest in the work of Education, and that they are desirous of having schools for freedmen. Your kindness is appreciated and your endeavors to establish schools for the furtherance of education gratefully acknowledged.

I have the honor to be, Sir
With sincere respect
