446 Head Quarters Dist. of Alabama Montgomery Ala March 9" 1867 437/ Shepherd Col O.L. Comdg Post of Mobile Ala Col I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6" inst requesting that Co "C" of your Regt may be ordered to the Post of Mobile, and in reply would inform you that the Major General is now absent. Upon his return I expect one Co will be ordered here either from your Post or the Posts in the Bay, to replace Co "D" 33rd Infty which goes to the District of Chattanooga. Unless more troops are ordered into this District, it is not likely that more than two Co's can be left at Mobile, as one or more Posts are likely to be established in addition to those already existing within the limits of this Command. I am Colonel Very Respectfully Your obdt servant 1" Lieut 24" U.S.I. & A.A.A.G. Head Quarters Dist. of Alabama Montgomery Ala March 9" 1867 431/448 Asst Adjt Genl Bureau R.F. & A.L. Washington D.C. Sir I have the honor to inform you that transportation was issued from these Head Quarters for Sylvia Lockhart (Col child) from Cusseta Ala to Montgomery Ala, under the following circumstances. The Girl was being unlawfully held in possession by a man named Lee Gunn who was about to move to Mississippi. Upon learning the facts in the case a Non Com'd Officer was sent from here with an order to get possession of the child and bring her to this place that she might be returned to her parents. The man Gunn was on the point of moving so that no time was allowed for making application to your Office for the order of transportation. I would respectfully request that a limited number of blank transportation orders from your office be furnished these Head Quarters to be used in cases of emergencies requiring immediate action. I am Sir Very Respectfully Your obdt servant 1" Lieut 24" U.S.I. & A.A.A.G. 447 Head Quarters Dist. of Alabama Montgomery Ala March 9" 1867 425/452 Tracy Bvt Maj Geo H. Sub Asst Commr Mobile, Ala. Major Your communication of the 7th inst in reference to three children of Ludy Rogers, is received. The same mail brought also a copy of the communication to Mr Goode referred to in your letter and returned with Mr Goode's endorsement. The latter states that the woman "Ludy" contracted with Mrs Rogers for the services of herself & childen, for the year '66. That she subsequently abandoning her contract, he at the instance of Gen Swayne, apprenticed the children to Mrs Rogers. The General has not yet returned from his tour being detained by breaks in the railroad between Huntsville and Chattanooga. The case will be submitted to him on his return. My letter to Mr Goode referred also to the case of Alfred Rogers a boy 16 years old held also by Mrs Rogers. Mr Goode states that the boy has not been bound and that he is now at the Rogers place subject to the order and control of his Parents. The Father of the boy is also named Alfred & his whereabouts can probably be ascertained through the woman Ludy. You will please afford him any assistance he may require in getting his son. Where parties unlawfully hold the children of others the detail of a soldier or two to enforce the demand of the Bureau has been found to be the most prompt and efficacious mode of settling the matter. Where you need such detail you will apply to the Commanding Officer of the Post for it. I am Major Very Respectfully Your obdt servant Supt
