Sir

Yours of the 27" Ult asking if any provision is made for extending medical aid to the freedmen, is received. In reply I have to say that medical aid is afforded them by the Government only at the regular Bureau Stations. At present the system cannot be extended or other stations made.

Very Respectfully

Major

I have just returned from North Alabama, and seen your letter to Mr Buckley of 2" inst, with which I am pleased. You are authorized to rent the two buildings of which you speak at fifty (50) and twenty (20) dollars per month, respectively. The lease should be terminable at our option.

With regard to building arrangements, I am now only able to say, that you know I like the plan of building three neat, plain school houses; and that as fast as you write me that arrangements have been made for securing ground which you consider effectual, I will recommend to General Howard, in each instance, a suitable appropriation. I
wish you, also to forward an estimate, as soon as convenient, of the amount of funds required to furnish these buildings with the necessary school furniture.

Very Respectfully
Your obdt servant

Dear Sir

I have just returned from North Alabama, and find, to my regret, that your favor of 27" Ult, received during my absence, has not yet been acknowledged.

My recent visit to Mobile was made in hopes the time had come at last for getting hold of the Marine Hospital, an end I had been more than a year trying to attain. Instead I was compelled definitely to abandon my expectations.

Now I am of course anxious for the next best thing. Major Tracy, our excellent Bureau Agent at Mobile, recommends the immediate lease of two buildings which he has found, suitable for school purposes, which I have authorized. He further advises the erection of three or four plain, neat school houses at convenient places, and thinks the colored people will provide the ground. I have written him that on their doing so, I would in each instance recommend to General Howard an appropriation such as should be necessary to help them to a building.

I do earnestly desire the institution and maintenance at Mobile of a first class academy. That is what I wanted with the Hospital. Failing this last, I will do anything I can thats equitable to help on a joint effort of your Society and the colored people of Mobile to accomplish the same. Mr Brunch writes Mr Buckley (March 5th) that the colored people have already procured a lot in a suitable part of the City. I shall at once recommend to General
Howard an appropriation towards an academy, and as soon as it is heard from, I think it would be well for you to come here that the matter may be finally arranged. I should be very glad to see you.

The precise terms of the trusteeship I have not yet had occasion to consider, we have all the same end in view and there need be no difficulty on that point

I shall be glad to hear from you again on the receipt of this. Our school Return for last month exceeds 5300, a great increase since my annual Report
