If you will forward to this office an affidavit concerning the outrages committed against you specifying the persons concerned in them it will be used confidentially and measures taken to prevent their recurrence. Sir Your statement of the case of Brister Days is received. In a conversation relative to this man which I had with Mr. Griffin last week, he promised to send up some additional testimony. Ala. Sir Your communication to Genl Swayne relative to appointment of an Agent for the issue of Corn & Bacon to the destitute in your county has been received. In reply I would state that such appointments have been left to Col Cruikshank and who is supposed to have given all the necessary instructions to County Officers. If no such instructions have been given, you are hereby authorized to appoint an Agent for the issue of the supplies that may be hereafter furnished your County. Mr Rabb, who has been acting in that capacity will continue to do so until the present supply is disposed of. Very Respectfully Your obdt servant 4" Lieut 24" U.S.I & A.A.A.G. 12 Head Quarters Dist of Alabama Montgomery Ala April 9" 1867 Pope Bvt Maj Genl John Commanding Third Military District General I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of communication addressed to you April 3" 1867 by the Secretary of War propounding certain inquiries as to the proper relief of destitution within the limits of your command, referred to me for answer so far as this State is concerned. In reply I have the honor to report that a monthly supply of Twenty five thousand bushels of White Corn, and Seventy five thousand pounds of bacon (clear sides) delivered in equal quantities at Huntsville, Montgomery, Selma, and Mobile, will in my judgement be necessary and sufficient for that purpose during the ensuing four months, and that supplies of the kind indicated afford the greatest relief at the least cost, and are otherwise best suited for the purpose.
