Marion Springs Ala. / Sir, In answer to you communication of the 22 inst I have to say that there are other modes prescribed by the code for punishment besides the Chain Gang. It will be necessary for the Judge of the Court in which the man you refer to was tried, to revise his sentence. Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant Maj. Wetumpka Alabama / Dear Sir, Information has been filled at these Hd qrs that certain parties on Chauahatchee Creek sold a freedman named Leonard Hart on Wednesday last. I wish you to be present at the examination which is directed to be made of these parties by the Probate Judge of Elmore Co, and to inquire of Willis Brooke, one of the witnesses to the alleged sale of his daughter in Tallansie and to report such facts as you may deem important to be known at these Hd Qrs Very Respectfully Your Obt Servant Maj General 51 Hd qrs District of Alabama Montgomery Ala April 27 1867 To the Sheriff of Elmore Co Alabama / Sir You are hereby directed to comply with the instructions of the Probate Judge of Elmore Co in arresting and bringing before him for examination John Brooke and Willis or Willette, who are alleged to have been concerned in the selling of a freedman names Leonard Hart on the 24th inst You will also bring before the said Probate Judge the witnesses in the case whom he will designate to you You are further directed to accompany the said Leonard Hart to his former home with William Garrett and put him into full possession of his property, and give him full protection for himself and family thereon Very Respectfully Your Obt Servant Maj General
