Sir

Your communication of the 1st ult, relative to a freedman - Allen - in the employ of A.K. Dennit, has been referred to this Office. If the statement as to the employer violating his contract is correct, and if he cannot be induced to comply with it, the employee would be justified in leaving without a discharge. As to the employer keeping the employee's daughter as his mistress, the only course practicable is to bring an action for seduction under the civil law.

Sir

A man named John Paine states at this Office that he is nearly blind, and quite destitute, and that with his wife, and two small children he desires to get to his friends where he can be cared for. He is now living in Elmore Co. with his brother who is quite poor and hardly able to support even his own family. He stated that his wife was your niece, and wished me to write you, asking for means to enable him to reach you. Will you please reply by return of mail stating what you can do in this case.
