General

I have the honor to request that authority may be granted me to purchase for the Bureau a Printing Press, size No 3, as per Enclosed Circular, price $425. The press heretofore used is a very old one, much out of repair, and will soon be utterly useless.

It was originally used by the Military, and turned over by them to my Quartermaster on the Muster-out of the Volunteer troops here. By the use of this new press the service of an Assistant at $25.00 per month can be dispensed with, and a better character of work turned out.

A small additional amount of type will also be required, the cost of which will not exceed $25.00. The total cost of press and type landed here will not exceed $500.00.
