124 244 Head Quarters District of Alabama Montgomery Ala. June 27" 67 122/132 Smith Robert.F. Sub Asst Comm'r Opelika, Ala. Sir A statement is made at this office by Peter Perry (freedman) that he contracted, during the year, a portion of the plantation of Mr Beb Harris at Silver Run, Russell County, in which contract said Harris agreed to furnish all provisions, and bear other expenses connected with working the plantation, but, failing to do so, the freedman Perry was compelled to seek elsewhere for work for himself (leaving a portion of his family on the plantation). During his absence Harris drove his family from the plantation, and told him on his return that he had forfeited his interest in the crop by his absence. You will please investigate the case. If the freedman's statement is correct it would seem that action for damages might be brought against Mr Harris Very Respectfully, Your obd't Serv't O.D. Kinsman Sub. Asst.
