Major,

Yours of the 1st inst., relative to McCann (colored), who states that he believes he knows the present hiding place of the murderer John Orrick, is received.

The Assistant Commissioner desires me to say that if McCann has any positive knowledge of this subject, or has been in recent communication with Orrick, transportation will be furnished him for the purpose of tracking the fugitive, and if this is the case you will notify this office by telegraph. If however his knowledge is limited to suppositions as to the probable hiding places of Orrick, and his belief that the latter has not left the country, it is not deemed necessary to send him, as there are probably many other persons in and about Greensboro' who are as well posted as McCann.

Very Respectfully
