Sir

The enclosed letter of Mr H.H. Armstrong was handed me this day by Mr John Dun of this City. He states that Joseph Dun (col'd) and family have left the place of Mr Talley, fearing violence and harm received nothing for their labor during some six months. You will proceed to Notasulga and take such action in the case by arbitration or reference to the Civil Authority Courts as may be found desirable. Sir

Your communication dated the 24th August 1867, asking as to your rights in the possession of two colored children placed in your charge by the Mother when dying, is received. Without an order from a Court having jurisdiction you have no claim upon the children. You should bring the case before the Probate Court of your County for adjudication.

Major

A Circular lately received from the Commissioner classifying the Civilian Agents of the Bureau and the recent newspaper statements relative to the muster out of Volunteer Officers seems to indicate that hereafter the Bureau work will be performed by Officers of the Regular Army and Civilians. The Asst. Comr. desires me to inquire whether in the event of your muster out you desire to remain as a Civilian Sub. Asst. Comr. at the maximum pay allowed that class of Officials - one hundred and fifty ($150.00/100) dollars per month. The duties of Quartermaster and Commissary would also devolve upon you.
