Sir:

I enclose herewith check No 5496 drawn by G. Bell Maj & C.S. U.S.A. on the Assistant Treasurer of the U.S., New York dated Washington D.C. Nov 12th 1868 and drawn payable to Wm Janes Co H 44th U.S.C.T. or order, for the sum of fifty eight dollars and fifty cents ($58.50/100) being the amount of his claim against the Government for commutation of rations while a prisoner of War.

The discharge of the above named man also enclosed.
Please acknowledge receipt.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the discharge of William Janes late of Co H 44th U.S.C.T. together with check No 5496 for fifty eight dollars and fifty cents (58.50/100) being the amount of his claim against the Government for commutation of rations &c.

These papers were enclosed in letter L.S. 2186 from William P. Drew Agent in charge of Claims Division.
