General:
I have the honor to submit the following report of the operations of the Bureau in this State for the month ending December 31" 1868.
There has been no material change during the month.
The freedmen with very few exceptions are at work and doing well. All the Reports except the one from the Sub. Asst. Commissioner at Greenville Ala., show a better feeling existing towards the colored people.
The Schools are in a very fair condition and increasing in number, all the buildings in course of construction having been completed except three.
In compliance with instructions from the Commissioner all the Officers and civil employees were dis-charged on the 31" December 1868 except five, viz. three Asst. Supt. of Education and two Clerks; all tho property pertaining to the Bureau was sold reserving so much as was required for use of the Educational and Claim Departments, and most of the Records closed on that date.
Very Respectfully
Your obedient Servant
