disease and death. Eight hundred and seventy nine (879) died at the hospitals and dispensaries in this District during the first year alone, while during the next year quite a large number died from Cholera, which prevailed as an epidemic in that part of the State bordering on the Gulf.

Since September 1st 1865, twenty one (21) Medical Officers have been employed under contract in this District, of whom three (3) have died and eighteen (18) have been discharged. None now remain in service. These gentlemen with perhaps one or two exceptions have performed their duties with zeal and efficiency. The supply departments of the Army upon which we have been dependent for Medical and Subsistence Stores, have always responded promptly to our requests, and the supplies forwarded by them have uniformly been of excellent quality.

In dissolving my connection with the Bureau I desire to express my appreciation of your official courtesy to me, and to thank you for your many acts of personal kindness.

I am Colonel
Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Servant
Andrew Gray
Surgeon in Chief
