Pierce Asst Supt. March 27, 1866 who forwards copies of testimony in the case of the shooting of a freedman. Office Asst Coms'r B.R.F. & A.L. Mont. April 2, 1866 Respectfully returned to Bt Maj C.W. Pierce. These men may be released on say $5000 bail to answer the charge of assault, provided they will pay the negro damages for shooting. I would make the damages proportionate to the amount of injury, say from one hundred to five hundred from each party. This course is optional with Maj Pierce as he can judge from the facts whether it is best, but if followed will be approved. It will be almost impractical to convince a court for the trial of this case, officers being so scare. By order of Bt Maj Gen Wager Swayne C.
