Sept. 1865, leaving a wife named Sallie and five (5) children named Amanda, John, Susan, Saphrona, and Sarah, Sallie with all the children now live with Thomas Price Esq at 155 Hoburth, Hilcox Co Ala. [[/left margin]] S253 Continuation of Endorsement on letter of F Sulzner Office Sub. Asst. Comr. B.R.F. and A.L. Dist of North Ala. Huntsville Oct 12/67 Respectfully returned to O.D. Kinsman Sub. Asst. Comr. Montgomery, Ala. with information that the property of Mr Sulzner at Athens, Ala. was turned over to me as confiscable and abandoned property, and has been as carried on my returns, and has been used by the freedmens aid commission of Cincinnati Ohio through Miss M.F. Walls, for a Freedmens School House. The Bureau has made many improvements in fences and on the House, to make it tenable. The property has been advertised for sale by the Sheriff of Limestone County in execution but on receiving notice from me that it was held by the Govt as above, the sale I think was postponed. I am advised that Miss Walls expects to use it the ensuing year for Freedmens School subject however to orders from the U.S. Authorities. The improvements and care of property in my judgment is a fair compensation for use of building so far. (signed) Jno B Callis Bvt Brig Genl and Sub. Jno B Callis S.A.C. at Huntsville, who will endeavor to cause a settlement of this claim If Mr Devar refuses to settle and the claim is a good one it would seem that any lawyer would undertake the case and himself become security for the payment of costs of this courts is often pursued.
