Huntsville Ala 19 Sept 1865

Dear Sir 
On reaching my dwelling on Saturday evening the 9th Inst. I found the communication, a Copy of which follows.

"Office Supt. RF & A Lands Sub Dist Huntsville"
Huntsville Ala. Sept. 9th 1865

"You will please come to this office & execute a lease for the property you occupy from July 10th 1865, the time you got possession, or show cause, if any you have why said lease should not be made"

early on the Monday following I repaired to your office & had a short interview with you touching the subject matter which was concluded with the remark that I would furnish you with a written statement.
It may not be irelevant to state that I have been a resident of the Town of Huntsville for more than 34 years, that my family consists of wife & six daughters one of whom alone is married with five children, and that I have been the occupant of my dwelling since the spring of 1844 until the month of Jany 1865, whilst in the peaceable possession of the same, conducting myself as a quiet citizen. House surrounded with an armed guard of soldiers, on the evening of the 13 Jany 1864
