Huntsville Ala. Septr 28. 1865

Dr. Charles H. Patton Willards Hotel
Washington City. Dear Sir.
On your departure from Huntsville a week since, I furnished you with a statement which had been submitted to T.M. Goodfellow Supt R.F. & A.L. Sub-district Huntsville Ala. in reply to a communication from him & requiring me to execute a lease for my dwelling House in Huntsville then in the occupancy of myself & family.

This statement I had supposed would have Satisfied any reasonable man, that Such requisition of rent could not be demanded of me by the Freedman Bureau of this place under any Statute of the United States, or instructions emanating from the chief office under the charge of Maj Gen. O.O. Howard Washington City.

Mr Goodfellow thought otherwise & enacted of me the lease executed under protest which was also enclosed with my statement.
