formerly belonging to me & his wife, and has had erected a house for them to live in and takes care of these children. Lewis & his wife Mary Ann (selected to keep the children) have no children, are industrious kind temperate and well behaved. They are anxious to take the children and raise them under my supervision. Now if I can secure the children so as to control them I will send to Alabama for them, and will either keep them as above proposed, or will hire any person the Freedman's Bureau may select to take charge of them. My object is to have the children well raised, and not to permit them to be abused. I have ample means to do so. And if I can have my efforts seconded by the Freedmans Bureau I will endeavor to have them well raised. I further propose to give any security that may be required in order to endear my person to the deceased mother who was a good kind and faithful servant.
If you have no authority to act in the [[?]] will you be so kind as to make such recommendations as may be necessary to carry out my object. Your assistance will be duly appreciated by me and will be a debt of lasting gratitude from the children.
