Hd Qtr. Freedmens' Bureau,
Talladega, Ala. Oct. 9th/65.
Brig. Gen. Swayne,

Sirs.-
I have the honor to report that I am acting as Asst. Sup. Freedman &c at this Post; and also have the Superintendence of the Freedmens school.- They are soon to have a new school house, & to be used also for a Church:-
They are destitute of suitable Teachers, and I think need white Teachers:- We have a Missionary Society at the North, and I think they will send us three or four Teachers; and possibly one or more in my Family. To obtain these Teachers, I wish to go North; and respectfully ask for leave of absence, from my Post, for forty or fifty days, to be in the State of New Hampshire about twenty or thirty days, and ask, to be ordered to report in N.H. for this purpose, and also, an order for the Quarter-Masters to give me Transportation to Farmington N.H. and also to return, for myself, and three or four Teachers.-
I can much better be absent now, than later: as Contracts will be wanted by the last of next Month, for another year; Contracts for this year close at Christmas.-
