not authority to furnish transportation beyond Montgomery. He has however written to the Assist. Com'r  in Montgomery to aid these freedmen.

These people thus, under the promise that they should be sent to their home, left their places of employment and could obtain no support for themselves or families, and since these have been furnished the means of subsistence by me and friends. 

In these unfortunate conditions I hope in good faith to them, and for charity to them you will aid them to reach their homes where they can find employment and friends.

They are mostly women and children and some cannot provide for themselves at all.
