P.O is accused of having thrown down a pregnant woman, placed his foot on her head, and given her a hundred or more blows with hickory sticks. The woman, however, did not show marks of such a severe beating, though some few slight cuts were visible on her shoulders. In Benton, a woman reports that her former master drove her off his place, and after she had hired a house in the village, came into her house and whipped her, driving her off from there, and telling her she should not live anywhere within reach of him. Such instances claim address, of course, a citizen of Benton, on the other hand, came to me a day or two since, to obtain a guard to remain permanently in the village to keep the negro residents in control.
