Bureau Refugees Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands.
Selma, Ala. Nov. 7th 1865

C. Cadle, Jr.
Bvt Col and A.A.G.

Colonel: Your telegram of the 4th inst was duly received, but the sending of reports has been delayed by reason of an error discovered, and other unavoidable circumstances. Measures are taken to provide against any such failure hereafter. The constant and multifarious calls upon my attention, taken in connection with my complete lack of reliable assistance, renders it impossible for me to keep all the business of the office in proper condition. I wish an agent from your office could be sent here with power to settle the contest with this treasury agent, definitely. The vexations alterations of success and defeat, with a score of suffering families depending upon the adjustment nearly wear one out. This new phase will give Maj Knott just time to collect the rents for this month, and probably tear down the houses they have been putting up on the land I had allotted them. I will endeavor to secure a copy of Security McCulloch's instructions & send by next mail.
Very Respectfully
Sam'l S. Gardner
Supt Freedmen
