Dist. Talladega Ala. Talladega Dec 8th 1865. }

Brig. Gen'l. Swayne;
Ass't Com. Bureau R.F. & A.L.;

General;
We have a camp of freedmen, consisting of women with children, that cannot support themselves & families, also sick men sick women & sick children, all standing in urgent need of hospital treatment - all suffering from the want of proper food, clothing, bedding, & the comforts of life: yet we have not the first article of furniture - nor any medicines, to meet this crying want. What shall be done? How shall this be met? As it is, it is a burning shame & disgrace to the Bureau. It is a violation of the laws of humanity. I wrote you three weeks ago & again one week ago setting forth some of the conditions of this Bureau. but as yet have received no communication from your office. I again ask to be relieved from the duties of this office.
Very respectfully,
General, your obt. servt,
T. Humphrey
Assist Supt.
