Troy Pike County Ala.
Sept 18th 1865

General
Yours of the 16th Inst in answer to same of 13th has just been rec'd.
I have accepted Winslow on the terms indicated in yours. but I am much troubled as to the consequences for if the witnesses are not sent down immediately. I shall not be able to keep the Grand Jury together long enough to find a Bill against him at the present term of the County & then I will have to keep him with me around the Circuit - as I have no authority to commit him to jail - Please

Transcription Notes:
"to find a Bill against him" - this is what the Grand Jury does. It is proof of guilt, to then have a trial. [[stamp]] THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES [[/stamp]]
