Crop Keys, Octr 16th 1865
General Swain
Dear Sir-
I visited the city of Montgomery a few days since, and while there made application for assistance, but was denied upon the ground that I had the means of subsistance about me. Now, General, not wishing nor intending to deceive the authority in Montgomery, and thinking that an idea of that kind might be entertained by some, I have thought it right and proper that I should give you a full and plain statement of my situation, and the motive that prompted me in making application for assistance, and hoping, General, that you will pardon the liberty I take in this tresspassing upon your valuable time, I will endeavor to lay my statement before you in as short and consise a manner as possible. In the first place as regards my health, I would say that I have been afflicted with Rheumatism for the last 12 or 13 years, for the last four years I have been compelled to use crutches to enable me even to get about the house, and am now, and have been for the last two years or
over
