establishment to the trustees in good presentation with the Museum & c intact-

This agreement (which was written) I confidently hoped & believed would be faithfully carried out, but am sorry to say that four months have passed, the building, Museum, apparatus &c have been going to destruction & nothing has been done - (except boarding up some windows) I visited McCartey today in company with with Surgeon Salten & Genl Garrard, & besides the dammage which has been accruing from leakage during four months, many of our most valuable models, anatomical preparations, apparatus &c have been taken off to the amount of several thousand dollars, articles too which cannot be replaced on this side of the atlantic - the former chief of the bureau (Col Harmount) was under the assumption that no defraudation had been committed on the Museum &c, but on my visit today I saw that a great many articles have been removed since my last visit a few weeks ago - (He proposition of Genl Swayne I do not think a liberal one - was a rent of $1000 a year for three years or its equivalent in repairs - a building of this kind would be cheap, at present rates, at $3000 a year, as common dwellings are renting from $1500 to $2500 - with from what I learn of Gen Swayne I have no doubt his course is dictated.
