Sir

I have the honor to report that on Saturday the 5th inst two men were arrested and taken to the Provost Marshalls Office charged with beating a Colored Drayman. The charge was substantiated by a US Soldier named Bill who was present and interspersed to keep the peace and to keep the two men from killing the Drayman. One of the men admitted that he struck the Drayman. Bill swears that both were beating him. There was no cause offered only this the Drayman said he knew a Mr. Jeffries who was just then arrested for murder. The men who committed the Assault on the Drayman were permitted to go free.
