Huntsville Ala Oct 26 / 65

Majr Goodfellow;

On the approaching occupation of N. Ala by contending forces Mrs Weeden having no family with her, but two unmarried daughters, could not occupy both her residence in Huntsville, & her plantation. She therefore placed a friend (Dr Buck) in her residence, & went to her larger interests.

Her motives for leaving (see Mr. Bradley's letter) furnishes the clue to her acts, as well as the inspirations of her conduct. She left the city simply & purely to preserve her property from loss & destruction. And nothing can be found in her conduct, that is not satisfactorily, & completely explained on this theory. An old lady, with no family with her but two single daughters, advised by a prominent friend of the U.S. Government to the course she took; & having a lawful, & reasonable object to accomplish thereby; furnish the most complete negations [[strikethrough]] proof [[/strikethrough]] of disloyal intentions - proof arising from the persons, the motives, the adviser, & the circumstances.
