Brig Genl Swayne
Asst Comr Bureau of
Refugees Freedman and Abandoned Lands

General
I have the honor to request that I may be furnished with Transportation for myself and family Consisting of seven (7) persons from Opelika Ala to my home near Culpepper Court House Virginia for the following Reasons

I was obliged to leave my house in Virginia in consequence of the continued presence of the two contending armies Everything in the way of stock or means of support having been taken by either one or the other army, since the date of my leaving. I have resided at this place about two years — and now the downfall of the so called Confederacy has left me without any means of support here, or ability to Return home
