in forcing these blacks into a condition of servitude, equal to or even worse for them, than there the old system of slavery.

In my opinion it is not prudent or safe to entrust a State Government into the hands of these Alabameans.

I will now ask the opinion on another case. Washington Hammond who was killed [[strikethrough]] in the Rebel army [[/strikethrough]] while engaged in "Bushwhacking" (after having removed his wife & child south upon the approval of the Union troops,) owns about 80 acres of land 1 1/2 mi S. of Stevenson, which has now no house or fences upon it, Henry Cole (a worthy Col'd man) wishes to till the said land & move onto it ; wilt thou grant him an order to do so.

These Rebels are charging us big prices for wood; can this be remedied? Are there any freedman Commissioners app'd in the adjoining Counties to this. I have had a number of applicants from adjoining counties who have made heart rending statements of shameful treatment of them by the white people. Please write me by return mail. In great haste, I will now subscribe myself as thy friend
Wilmer Walton.
