I have the honor to call your attention to an order issued and enforced by the Mayor of Selma, the effect of which is that a chain gang partly made up of women is set to work on the streets there, and cruelly beaten, and to request that the Colonel commanding that Post be directed to annul such proceedings both as to the putting women to work on the streets, and the beating of either men or women.

Very respectfully
Your obedient servant
