I find the hospital in a comfortable state of repair, about 30 Sailors and Employees of the Q. M. Dept. & 70 Soldiers & none of them very sick. I think it would save Govt great expense to provide some other means to support these, and if it could be given up to the Freedmen for School & Asylum purposes it would thereby be a saving of expenditure in another direction. I called for the Med. Directors report & recommendation but found him absent. I will request him & Col. Robinson to forward to you immediately their recommendations or suggestions. I know of no better nor more desirable building Location for our purposes in the U.S.

I should regard it as a great credit to the Govt to appropriate for such purposes
