Murphys April 13th 1866

Sir:
On the Part of Mrs. Sarah M. Powell Widow. Resident of this place. I have the honor to write you for information as to her Son, George B Powell, who wrote her last, on or about the 15th of December 1865, from Fort Montgomery, Alabama, Stating that he was Provost Guard. (and was then suffering from a wounded Arm received at the Fort on or about the 25th of November.) attached to Co "A" 8th Regt Inftry Iowa Volunteers. this is the last information the Lady his mother has of his whereabouts, and she fears that he has lost his life in the service. her object is to obtain if possible whether he is alive or not, and having written to the department, and the locality where he enlisted receiving no definite answer. you are respectfully solicited to make enquiries and give her such information. as to find him if alive or ascertain if not. if his Death occurred in the service, and where.
