neighborhood who were free before the rebellion — that its remote position from any military Post gives to the negro no protection from the cruelties inflicted by the desperadoes who inhabit that region of the state — and as Judge Mudd declines to investigate the murders that have been recently committed and to bring the offenders to justice, if a military force were detailed to proceed to Elyton for the purpose of affording protection to its loyal inhabitants black & white, with authority to investigate the facts in relation to three murders, it would have a salutary influence upon the still rebellious element of that community.
