Hon. Wager Swayne, Brig. Gen. and Assistant Commissioner of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands.
Montgomery, Alabama

Sir:

Please give me a situation as teacher of a school for juvenile freedmen in La Fayette, Alabama, or somewhere else. I have twelve years experience in teaching; and will practise all energy, patience and christian care to insure success in instructing the pupils intrusted to my care. I have preached to the colored people in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama; now, I desire to teach their children. I feel thankful that slavery no longer continues to exist in the South; and that it has ceased to be a national sin, which has for many years called down upon our country the just displeasure of God. I sincerely hope the government of the United States will continue to protect the freedmen in their natural right to liberty; and that all possible means will be adopted to educate them, and there-by perpetuate their freedom. I can take the test oath. I have the honor to be, dear sir, with high consideration, yours &c., Joseph D. Bond.
