I have the honor to transmit herewith a communication of Asst. Surg. H.J. Phillips U.S.A. in charge of the Post Hospital. relating to 2nd Lieut. Wm A. H. Lewis 15th U.s. Infty. for whom a leave of absence was forwarded to your Head-Quarters on the 8th inst. I have assumed the responsibility of directing Lieut. Lewis to proceed immediately to his home, without writing for the approval of his leave of absence; and have detailed private John McCansland of Co. "A" 3. Batt'l 15th Inf. to accompany him, in compliance with telegraphic instructions received from Head-Quarters Dept of the South this day (copy enclosed.).
Lieut. Lewis' case is one of live and death and required immediate action.
