Near New Orleans L.A.
Jan 5th 1866

Brig. Gen. Wagner Swayne
Asst Commissioner of Freedmen &.c.

Dear Sir: -
The order has just been issued for the muster out of my regiment and as you desired me, I take the liberty to inform you of the fact. Should my services be desired in your department and the circumstances such that you can employ civilians I should be glad to accept a position in the Bureau. I would wish as far as possible to know before accepting such position the conditions upon which you could employ me and how long as it would not be worth while to go to Ala. unless I could be employed for some time. My wife is a teacher and would engage in teaching there if practicable. Please let me hear from you as soon as possible
Very respectfully Your Obt Servt
