General
I am the attorney representing the interest of several parties who have had iron seized and now in possession of R.F. Knott Special Agt. Treas Dept and Freedmen's Bureau in this place, and who claims to hold it by your orders and refuses to release the same except upon an adjudication of the merits of each case by yourself. I am anxious to present the claims to the proper person or tribunal for such an adjudication as may be proper and right, but I am informed by Maj S.L. Hoge Judge of the Freedmen's Court in this place that from what you have paid to him, he thinks it doubtful as to whether you will adjudicate it, and I am induced by his representation of you to ask who is the proper person to decide upon such cases, in order that I may have time and unnecessary traveling expenses in visiting Montgomery.
