General
I arrived here from Washington yesterday and according to Orders from the War Department I report to you I should have reported to you on my return from pensacola but Col Robinson informed that you had not returned from Washington and that he was ordered to new orleans to be mustered out that I had better report to Memphis to render his instructions I went to Memphis and reported to Genl Stoneman and he ordered me to report to Washington and furnished me with the transportation and Genl Howard ordered me back again I told him that I had reported the whole case to you and I thought you was still in Washington now Genl I Should like to go to work in this matter and work it up but if I do I will be compelled to begin at the starting point again for two of my main men have lift the city Walters is up at Corinth or some place on the rail road and I am not sure but think he is getting men and sending them down to this city that however I can find out I can go to [[?]] in a few days and it will be no expense to the goverment for transportation now all I ask is for you to give me an appointment as Special agent with pay enough to support me and my family and if these parties can be caught I will catch them
