There is much suffering among the poor in this portion of the State for want of food. Many have great difficulty in sustaining life. The supply of corn and bacon apportioned the counties to be furnished from the depot under the estimate made in October has not yet arrived. In an hour's ride on my pony on one of the coldest days of last week I found over sixty persons entirely without food, half this number were without shelter. There were two men amongst them but neither of them able to get out of their cabbins or make themselves a fire. I am sure that I do not over estimate when I say to you that there are not less than one hundred and fifty persons within one mile of the point from which I write who are not only without food but also
