of any means for obtaining it. I took with me our Probate Judge and two members of the Commissioners (overseers of the poor) and visited these people in person. The county has no funds however and cannot purchase food on credit. I have earnestly urged them to provide shelter for those unprotected. They prefer sending them back to their former homes. They I think in many instances a doubtful kindness as most of them have been compelled to abandon their homes in search of food. The County has done some thing however toward furnishing a little temporary relief in the way of Food about a peck of meal to the family. Private institutions have relieved some of the worst cases but unless some food arrives within a few days they will be compelled to suffer. Some of the most extreme suffering I have found is amongst the children of [[?]]less and abandoned women. These should be taken from their mother but I find few persons willing to take them as apprentices -
