To the Provost Marshall, at Gainesville, Alabama

Sir:

As agent of John S. Bealle, for whom I am overseer, I have the honor to report that I have in my possession in Pickens County, as agent for the said Bealle, two mules branded "C.S." which the said Bealle obtained possession of in good faith, and in the following manner: -

One of these mules is an iron grey, about five or six years old. On the 23rd of February, 1865, one of said Bealle's mules was impressed for the use of the Confederate States, and this mule was left in its place, as will appear from the annexed certificate of W. D. Weathersby, the officer who made the impressment.

The other mule above mentioned, is a light bay mule, age unknown. On the 23rd of February, 1865, one of the said Bealle's mules was impressed for the use of the Confederate States by order of Maj. Gen. S.D. Lee, and this mule was left in its place, as will appear from the annexed certificate of Capt. J.A. Torry, the officer who made the impressment. Ever since the exchange of mules made as I have stated, the two mules above mentioned have been in my possession as agent and overseer of the said Bealle. These mules are necessary for the cultivation of said Bealle's growing crop; and I respectfully ask permission for the said Bealle to retain possession of them as his own property.
