to Genls Grant and Thomas for redress, and an officer, Col: Vreeland was sent to my place, who examined into the case and decided that I was entitled to the crop raised upon my land, and that I had been most shamefully treated. Col. Callis in carrying out this decision and in other similar matters has given offence to the rebels in that part of the country and they will try their best to have him turned out of office. Should there be no other cause for his removal, unknown to me, I would most respectfully suggest that the said Col. Callis be retained in office, as his removal would give aid and comfort to the Rebel party. Col: Callis to my certain knowledge is an honorable man, who does his duty, but does not think it incumbent upon him to play 'Tody" to the Secesh Party.

I remain, General very respectfully
