until corn harvest.  At the same time they do not feel disposed to beg, thinking that with abundant prospective means, they ought to pay back to government what they have borrowed.  I am very confident that much good has been accomplished by these subsidies, as they have enabled some very worthy freedmen to get a a start in gaining a comfortable competence, which would have been impossible without them.  Perhaps I was not called upon for a defence of this action, but have taken the liberty to anticipate it, should it be considered censurable.
