Office of Supt. Dist. of Selma,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
Selma Ala May 4th 1866.

O.D. Kinsman
Bvt. Maj & A.A.G.

Major: I have the honor respectfully to ask leave of absence for forty five days from the 15th of May in order to visit home. I should be pleased to know the terms upon which leave will be granted.

During the past week I have used the authority of the Bureau in three several cases to prevent or discontinue legal process under a write of attachment, whereby all the stock implements &c on the place were siezed, and the cultivation of the crop stopped. As this would not only deprive the freedmen of the wages for labor already expended, but throw them out of employment, or compel removal with their families to another location. Under these circumstances, I issued an order for the cultivation of the place to proceed so that the freedmen might receive no detriment. In each case the order has been obeyed.
