Colonel: Your communication came to hand Friday morning. I was supposed to appear at Cahaba that day but used all the time and effort possible to get a report to send by boat. My clerk sent a letter to the "Nymph" but it was too late. On the 1st of June there were six men wearing the chain, named, Henry Brown, Robert Thompson, William Porter, Archie Huckabee, Buck Godwin and Israil Gaines. I saw these fastened to the chain, and took their names.
As to witnesses, I am uncertain how to proceed. If by loyal men, you mean loyal southern citizens, it would be difficult to procure those who could swear to the three points you mention, but if my testimony or that of other Northern men, or of colored southern men would be accepted. I could
